What’s new in software release 2.11?

Tue Sep 25, 2007 Karel Byloos

We have already hinted at some of the features that will be included in the 2.11 release, but you don’t need to wait much longer to find out. Herewith a quick preview of some of the features and functionalities that you can expect in software release 2.11.

1. Definable Startup behavior

You are now able to define the startup behavior of the iLiad, like opening a certain folder or loading the last read document.

2. Stylus Calibration

You can now re-calibrate your Stylus via the iLiad settings menu. This feature was developed as a community project with the help of community developers.

3. Improved Connection Manager

The Connection Manager has been improved to make it easier to find and connect to wireless networks; in addition we have also added support for the dial-up functionality of modem CF cards (GSM-data, CDMA).

4. Time zone Selection

You are now able set your local time offset to GMT so that your scribble files will show the correct local time.

5. Timed content download and device wakeup

With the Timed Connect you will be able to let your iLiad connect to the iDS at a set time. In case the iLiad is switched off it will wake up, connect to iDS, download any available content and power down again afterwards.

6. Multi Delete in Contentlister

You can now select up to 6 items in the Contentlister and delete them in one go.

7. Generic CPU frequency scaling

In order to save power, the CPU frequency has been scaled down when the processor is idle. Saving about 10% battery life.

8. Forward/Back buttons in PDF viewer

You can now easily navigate through PDF documents using hyper links via the forward and back button.

9. Added Spanish language support

The iLiad interface will now also support the Spanish language, in addition to English, German, French and Dutch.

10. Improved Mobipocket support for HTML-based content

The Mobipocket viewer will offer better support for more HTML-based content, including converted CHM files.

Software release 2.11 is scheduled for Wednesday 26th of September. If you have a MyiRex account, you will receive an e-mail notification when the software release is available for download.

Make sure to let us know what you think of this release.

    What about full screen ipdf?

This feature is not included in this software release. However we would love to integrate this and the other
iPDF functionalities developed by the community in future software releases. To facilitate for this we have set up a community project but it has become a bit silent around it lately. We still hope to be able to finish this project and welcome any community developers willing to participate.

OK, thank you! But is it really that hard to implement this by your programmers? It’s almost already done… From my experience of using of the patched version of ipdf this feature is very very useful (among other things: when you don’t see any interface elements (icons, battery indicator, etc) it looks like real book and this is very nice). A big plus of the full screen mode is a possibility of reading of big PDF’s ‘as is’ without any conversion (maybe only with some cropping) and this is why many people buy the iLiad. The big screen is one of the main advantages of the iLiad, so don’t get it wasted. Remember, competitors are coming :) Anyway, good luck!

What a wonderful release. Thank you!

I am very happy with the PDF links, calibration and improved energy savings.
However, I would still like the full screen ipdf (hope forward/backward pdf links will still work) and my favorite Dutch newspaper (NRC or Volkskrant). When is the latter to be expected?

The best feature - which you forgot to mention - is the ability to access one of the external cards when attached to the computer with the USB cable. The lack of this feature was a big problem before. Now I can finally transfer files to my CF card without problems.

My biggest remaining complaint with the software is the lack of native CHM file support. MOST technical manuals are in CHM format and I would like to read them as easily as PDF (without the hassle of converting the files - which don’t work very well - and without the special folders that we would have to use when using Mobipocket).

So please, in addition the TXT, HTML, and PDF you absolutely need to support CHM files also. The mobilpocket option is not good enough for this.

Some iLiads have problems when a CF is inserted during update.
After finished download, the iLiad tries to reboot but gets trapped in status of “progress bar not moving”. Only a reset helps. After turning iLiad on again, the iLiad reboots with “updating software” screen.

I installed the upgrade and was really looking forward to the facility to have the last document read open s soon as the Iliad is started. However I find that this does not work well at all. When I start the Iliad, it opens to random documents. Is there any way to sort this out so that it works correcrtly

What I still can’t understand: Why is the processor not sleeping completly. You can wakeup the processor if a button is pressed (interrupt to the processor). Are the electronic components so missdesigned that this is not possible?

After upgrading to version 2.11, I do not see the advantage of the screen calibration feature. In fact I had the idea that with the new E-ink technology there was no more any necessity of the burden of calibration and during the last two months (since I received the device) I never had any problem with calibration (with version 2.10.2). However, now with the new version, in a few days I needed to calibrate again four or five times. Another problem with the 2.11 version is that the sound get lost from time to time and need to be activated again.

    Hello,

I like 2.11, but have a question that you might be able to answer. I have both the older, and newer iLiad’s and when I upgraded to 2.11 they both want to connect to my wireless network. Everything I have tried does not work. After a short period I am pointed to my last document. My question is can I shut the WiFi off as I never us it anyway.

    Thanks
    Peter
