Introducing iLiad Book Edition

Wed May 7, 2008 Karel Byloos

Book EditionToday we have announced the iLiad Book Edition, a lower priced and simplified version of the earlier iLiad. Unlike the iLiad, the Book Edition has no WiFi capability but is otherwise similar to the original iLiad. The Book Edition is priced at 499,- EUR and comes with 50 pre-loaded free eBooks.

With the Book Edition we aim to offer the book lover all the good for less.

The official press release can be downloaded here and high resolution pictures can be found here.

Update: I noticed many blogs convert the Euro price incorrectly to the US Dollar price. The Euro price includes VAT which is not applicable for US customers. The retail prices for the Book Edition in the different currencies are: 399,- GBP, 499,- Euro and 599,- USD.

    Why does it weights 46 grams more than earlier iLiad?

    Seems to be an error in our spec page. Both versions have nearly identical weight.

    Nice move, I like the idea… Will it have the same firmware version as the “old one”?

    Any news on when/if it’s going to be available in the US?
    Also if it’s going to be sold here, what would the price
    be like?

    @Thomas
    The software is identical, apart from the WiFi connection manager, wired connectivity is still possible.

    @Temporary
    The Book Edition will be available from 9th May onward, and available in the US via our partner ereaderoutfitters.com. The RRP in the US is 599,- USD.

    Is it possible to let the old users download the 50 classics through the IDS?

    Yeah nice.

    But the color sucks a lot. Is it also available in black?

    Good news, considering that the WiFi was/is pretty much useless due to crappy software. To bad I already own one of those.

    It’s probably a good idea to focus also on the lower price market. In my opinion, Wifi is becoming quite important, though. (And improvements in the wifi connector software are badly needed.)

    Why not offering a version with wifi and integrated ethernet, mini usb (to directly connect the device to the PC) and a mini sd card slot for memory enhancement, but without the space taking CF card slot? And: Wouldn’t a device without the wacom tablet function be a lot less expensive?

    I agree that connectivity is getting more and more important in this day an age, however for book reading there is no reason to have it at this point as you can not download your content directly onto the iLiad.

    In regard to taking out the wacom tablet, it isn’t as easy as it sounds. For example, we would need to re-design a big chunk of the user interface which depends on the usage of the stylus and the price difference wouldn’t be big enough to consider it.

    A big cost driver for the higher price of the iLiad remains the display. With an 8.1-inch display vs. a 6-inch display you get almost 50% more reading space, hence the big difference.

    Perfect!
    I would like to know whether I can get this nice product in China.
    And when? how? at what price(RMB)?
    I noticed there is a website : http://www.irexreader.cn/, which is said to be an authorized website of irex technology.
    Is it so?
    And, there is no information about iLiad book edition there.

    I’d like to try this product and see whether it’s suitable for the kids in the middle school. They’re always carrying too many textbooks. And such a product might be great for those kids who have buried all their textbooks in the earthquake.

    Thanks a lot.
