Earlier this week news I Heart Huckabees video
got out about a Sony Reader event in New York on October 2. The title on the invitations reads: “Join Sony Electronics as we open a new chapter on digital reading”. There was no word on whether this involves launching a next-gen electronic book reader.
Either way it seems that Sony isn’t quite ready to cede the e-book markt to Amazon’s Kindle, who with its wireless download capabilities clearly has an advantage over the better looking Sony Reader.
However, this could be totally unrelated, but earlier this year Sony issued a statement that by the end of 2010 they want to ensure that 90% of their electronics product categories will be network enabled and wireless-capable, so this might just be the response of Sony to the success of the Amazon Kindle: a wireless enabled Sony Reader.

1 commentiRex & NRC nominated for the Accenture Innovation Awards
Earlier this year iRex and NRC Handelsblad My Cousin Vinny download launched the first e-paper in the Netherlands and the Jury of the Media & Communication Innovation Awards have nominated iRex and NRC Handelsblad for the ‘Blue Tulip’ award.
The ‘Blue Tulip’ award is the price for the ‘Best Innovation Concept’ in Media and Communication, and it is the second time that Accenture organizes this event.
During the Innovation Seminar on 23 October the jury will announce the winner of the Blue Tulip. Until that time everybody can vote on what they believe to be the best innovation concept in media and communication.
We believe that the cooperation between NRC Handelsblad and iRex Technologies to publish the first e-paper in the Netherlands is a true showcase in innovation of news media, so we certainly hope we can count on your vote.
1 commentPlastic Logic announces e-Newspaper reader
Plastic Logic have announced their plans to launch a flexible e-newspaper reader in Q2 2009. The reader (name is still unknown) is about the size of an A4 page (8.5-inch x 11-inch) and although the screen size is not mentioned, I would put my money on a 9.7-inch display, unless they have developed a new controller that is able to drive a larger display. Where current e-readers have glass based screens, this reader has a flexible “plastic” screen.
The device features a wireless link to download content, room enough to store “hundreds of pages of newspapers, books and documents” and support for MS Office formats as well as PDF. The pricing is unknown yet, but it is expected to be competitively priced among e-reading products.
After the earlier announcement of the Readius
and the rumors of a Kindle successor and now the Plastic Logic reader, 2009 is going to be a very interesting year for the growing e-reader market.

A group of first year students at the Caritas College will say goodbye to their heavy schoolbags and trade their regular text books for an iLiad. Gill & Macmillan, an Irish book publisher is the driving force being the project at the all-girl school, and with this project they want to determine how well e-books work in the classroom and examine their potential.
The students and the staff have received training in how to use the iLiad and they look forward to further explore this technology. Here at iRex we wish them already the very best and look forward to hear about their experience with the iLiad and the e-books.
