Yesterday Adam B. released the first installer of FBReader for the iRex Digital Reader 1000s. This is immediately also the first third party application on the iRex DR1000.

We are very excited with these developments and it is the philosophy of iRex Technologies to provide an open platform and we consider third party development an important element of the iRex experience.

Earlier this week we released a statement, in which we confirmed that there is an issue with the current battery firmware of the iRex DR1000S that is causing the battery life to be at least 30% less than expected and even causing a charging issue in some cases. This problem will be solved with the next software update v1.02.  Target date for this software update is the first week of November.

Following this update we are planning a larger update (v1.5) which will include more enhancements. I can not confirm a target date yet, but I can tell a bit more about what this update will include.

• Advanced Power Management: this will include the standby mode (suspend-to-RAM). This means that after x seconds the reader will go into standby mode in order to reduce the power consumption. This will substantially increase the battery life. By touching the sensors or using the stylus the reader will wake up again.

• Enhanced Scribble Performance: We are not completely happy with how the scribble functions is working right now and will be looking into improving this in order to offer a more accurate and natural writing experience.

• User customizable Toolbar: To allow users to quickly access to the functions and tools that matter the most to them, we are looking to add a user customizable toolbar into the status area.  For example,  you can add any of the tools like pencil, eraser, add bookmark or rotate to the toolbar and access them directly without the need to open the menu.

In addition to the above there will be a number of minor enhancements and bug fixes. More information will be announced in the coming weeks.

Following the release of the iLiad source codes we release today the source codes and SDK of the iOn platform on which the iRex Digital Reader 1000 series is based.

This includes all the sources except for the Mobipocket Plugin and the UDS Core.  The UDS or Universal Document Shell is a universal document viewer framework with a set of features to which additional rendering engines can be attached as plugins. This allows third party developers to easily add support for additional formats without the need to create a customer interface or features.

Dear Customer,

Over the last weeks there have been some issues related to the iRex shop, the iRex iLiad and iRex Digital Reader 1000. We apologize for the fact that we have been limited in our response so far and we understand and accept the criticism of not having addressed you properly, which has been an omission from our side.

The Lost Empire divx Let us start by looking at the different issues and how we intend to solve them:

• Since the introduction of the iRex Digital Reader 1000 we have received a huge amount of visits and orders at the iRex shop. The back-end system was not prepared to deal with such unexpected large volume. One of the known issues that you might have seen was that the status of the order was not correctly updated. This also affected our ability to initiate shipments. Once it became clear that our system was unable to handle the volume, we have initiated the necessary actions to solve this situation. These improvements are currently being implemented and we expect from next week onward to ship all orders in accordance with the dates indicated on the shop product page.

• In addition to the large volume of website visits we also received a huge volume of e-mails at shop@irextechnologies.com with inquiries about the product, orders and shipping status. This number even grew higher as a result of the above issues. With only limited capacity for  the shop operations and, at the same time, solving the above issues, we were not able to respond to all e-mails within an appropriate time. We apologize for this and within the next week we aim to respond to all e-mail inquiries within one  business day.

• We have identified a battery firmware problem with the DR1000S that is causing battery life to be at least 30% less than expected and even causing a charging issue in some cases. We like to state that there is nothing wrong with your product and the firmware issue will be solved with a software update. We are currently testing the solution and we expect to announce a release date for the software update by the end of this week.

• In line with our tradition of introducing ongoing enhancements, we will released our first software update for the DR1000S yesterday. This software release will solve a number of issues that have been identified since the introduction of the DR1000s. In the coming weeks and months we will continue to provide additional software updates.

• A number of customers have expressed their concern about the future of the iLiad. We like to emphasize that the iLiad products will remain in production and we commit ourselves to continue to support the iLiad platform including future service and maintenance updates. We will continue to actively support third party development projects both by our partners and the community. To that end we will release all the iLiad source codes later this week.

The Fifth Commandment rip

The first software update for the iRex Digital Reader 1000 series is available. It is a small update that solves some of the bugs that slipped in the initial software release.

• Mobipocket Dictionary Lookup function now working as intended. Dictionaries will be detected automatically if they are in the ‘System/Dictionaries’ folder or in the ‘eBooks’ folder if it exists (for compatibility with Mobipocket Desktop Reader).
• Last read page and zoom factor are now saved correctly.
• Improved boot time by storing font-cache on the internal Flash memory.
• Issue solved that a crash during boot could cause the reader not to complete booting.

This software update is part of an ongoing process to improve the overall performance of the iRex Digital Reader 1000, more software updates can be expected in the near future  including advanced power management that will introduce a standby and sleep mode on the iRex Digital Reader 1000.
