Speaking at the Society for Information Display (SID) conference in San Antonio, TX (USA),  iRex’s leading display expert Alex Henzen, announced new progress on development The Next Best Thing divx of a next generation of full color digital readers and confirmed the commitment to push the boundaries of electrophoretic display technology in order to meet the customer demand for high quality digital readers.

The ultimate goal of electronic paper displays is to mimic the appearance of pigment on paper. This means more than just bright color, the relfection also has to be diffuse.  By stacking three ultra-thin single layer panels on top of a white reflector, with each of the layers containing a switchable primary ink color (cyan, magenta and yellow) it is possible to make different combinations of the three inks and produce a wide range of colours in high resolution with a magazine quality.

Current color solutions for electrophoretic displays employ additive color mixing techniques and filters that comprise the reading quality of the display. The new iRex solution will be based on subtractive color mixing similar to physical printing which will offer three times the brightness of current color prototypes.  iRex expects to launch its next generation of full color digital readers mid 2011.

First you need all the current pending problems with your DR1000 and battery and bug issues and then do the next step or you will find none is purchasing anything to you.

    Great news!

rfog: I will give them the benefit of the doubt. They have fixed most of the problems with subsequent firmware updates, and I am hoping they will continue to improve the device. So far I am a happy customer, and if they keep making improvements then they will have my custom again. Hopefully they will continue to use the iOn platform for future devices, meaning that 3rd party apps will be compatible across devices (BTW, thanks for using Linux!) and some hardware improvements would be great.

Its a good new that IREX have announced a color solution as i have large collection of digital comics which i would like to read on e book reader. However it is important that the color device is affordable to most user and don’t have absurd high prices.

Considering that they abandoned everyone who bought the still pretty crippled iLiad my confidence in iRex is pretty close to zero. I most certainly wouldn’t risk buying anything from them again.

Agree with Pfisken, I bought my iliad about 2 years ago and feel disappointed: the wifi connection doesn’t work(or you have to be real linux guru to success),its software in general looks like unfinished product but the worst: it looks like irex just don’t care – Iliad abandoned child.

What is hard in hiring one-two full time developers to work on Iliad?
